Mahadev was formed in 2010 by Dave Cipriani after graduating from California Institute of the Arts MFA World Music Program as an outgrowth of music he had written or experimented with during his time at CalArts. Gathering several other MFA graduates from CalArts, he assembled Mahadev to perform original music and covers that reflect the diverse music he and the other members had studied. This is the debut album of this ensemble. Collectively, members of the band have studied or worked with Larry Koonse, Charlie Haden, Miroslav Tadic, Charlie Byrd, Christopher Parkening, Randy Gloss, Ali Akbar Khan, Aashish Khan, Barun Kumar Pal, Swapan Chaudhuri, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Houman Pourmedhi, Joe LaBarbera, John "Drumbo" French and the Magic Band, Wadada Leo Smith, Vinnie Golia, Chris Brubeck, and many others. Members of Mahadev have also shared stages with Galactic, Widespread Panic, The Motet, Garaj Mahal, Ike Willis, Les Claypool, Keller Williams, Medeski Martin and Wood, Ansamble Mastika, Jack Rose, Glenn Jones (Cul De Sac), Espers and many others. The Album: “Raga Shivranjani” is a composition by the Gundecha Brothers, arranged by Cipriani. The Gundecha Brothers are the leading singers of Dhrupad music, the most ancient style of North Indian (Hindustani) Music that is still performed. “Eastern Promise,” “The Greyhound” and “Chant” had much of their material written before 2008 but came to their present form during Dave’s stay at CalArts. “Baba” was originally written as a solo guitar composition and was featured on Dave Cipriani’s 2004 solo guitar album “American & Other Faraway Places,” and was performed frequently by his Baltimore band Satabdi Express. “(Woke Up This Morning With A) Vision of Bhairav” is a blues based on the traditional Hindustani morning raga Bhairav and was written at CalArts. “Farka” is dedicated to the late Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure, also written at CalArts. “Wayne’s Bane” “Sujit’s Dream” and “The Moors” were performed also previously by Satabdi Express, (with very different instrumentation). Mahadev has performed throughout the Los Angeles area at venues such as Peace Yoga Gallery, Café Roma, Dancing Shiva, El Cid, Lighting In a Bottle Festival, The Garter, The Museum of Music and Instruments, The Rumour Mill, The Talking Stick, Bar Pico, Yoga LA, Eagle Rock Music Festival, Trinity Yoga, Rising Lotus, Alva’s Showroom, Muddy Waters Cafe (Santa Barbara) and Kaleidoscope Free Speech Zone (San Francisco
