Detroit was and is the American "Motor Town". However, the hometown of the three largest American automakers is also one of the most important birthplaces of the music we call "Soul". The economic boom had brought many black Americans to the steel and car metropolis, and the demand for musical entertainment in the local clubs and also for records by the most successful musicians was high. At the same time “Soul music” began its triumphal rise at the end of the 1950s.
