Marc Higgins and the Chainsaw Bears, offer a rootsy style of power pop that's akin to a contemporary, Southern version of The Replacements. Higgins, whose brand of folk-rock has been described as a cross between the punkish energy of the Replacements and the alt-country aesthetic of Whiskeytown, has long had a reputation for producing catchy pop hooks, going back to his work in such former bands as The Turnaround and The Edmonds. Marc Higgins & the Chainsaw Bears build on that tradition. “We all agreed with Marc Higgins & the Chainsaw Bears, so that's what we went with,” Higgins said of the new four-piece ensemble that is rounded out by guitarist Stephen Cantrell, bassist Don McGraw and drummer Michelle Lee. “And that name evokes a lot of images for people. Stylistically, Marc Higgins and the Chainsaw Bears churn out the kind of roots-flavored rock 'n' roll that has made Higgins a fixture on the Upstate music scene for nearly two decades.
