简介

William Anderson is known for his definitive recordings of American modernist masters like Charles Wuorinen, Elliott Carter, and Milton Babbitt. Anderson is a composer as well. His recordings of Mertz are a reflection of his great interest in tracing the ancestry of American modernism. In this case, Anderson shows how modernist values have a great debt to Goethe's naturalism and the idea of "organic music". Mertz' *Lied ohne worte* is an example, based entirely on a small melodic "seed" that grows like a plant. All of Goethe's writings about the *Urpflanze* come to mind when we listen closely to the music of J.K. Mertz. Mertz' arrangements of Schubert songs are classics. William Anderson studied guitar with David Starobin, and composition with Frank Brickle. He performs solo guitar recitals in festivals in Europe and Latin America. He has played with many ensembles, and collaborated with many major artists including the Metropolitan Opera Chamber Players, under James Levine; Yo-Yo Ma (in connection wit the Silk Road Project); the New York Philharmonic, Da Capo Chamber Players, Speculum Musicae, and the Theater Chamber Players, in Washington D.C. Anderson teaches guitar at Sarah Lawrence College and Queens College.
