In 1962, he won the first prize for drums at the Johannesburg Jazz Festival. He was an original member of the Blue Notes and the Brotherhood of Breath, historic South African bands that included Johnny Mbizo Dyani, Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana and Chris McGregor. After moving to London in 1964, he collaborated with Harry Miller, Kenny Wheeler, Evan Parker, Mike Osborne, Irene Schweitzer,and many others. In the 1990s he brought a band back to South Africa, and recorded the experience as Freedom Tour. He has also performed with Kidd Jordan, William Parker, Kali. Z. Fasteau, Marilyn Crispell, Frode Gerstadt, and others. He is a member of the Dedication Orchestra and the London Improvisers Orchestra. BOBBY FEW hails from Cleveland, Ohio where he studied classical piano for 12 years. His father introduced him to the music of Illinois Jacquet, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Jimmy Saunders, and Erroll Garner. Bobby learned boogie-woogie, and listened closely to his neighbor Art Tatum. He played jazz concerts at school, where he and his friends spearheaded its contentious integration in 1950. In Cleveland he played with Joe Alexander, Bill Hardman, Carl Fields, Richard Mitchell, Lawrence "Jacktown" Jackson, Gene Jordan, Raymond Farris, Cevera Jeffries, childhood friend Albert Ayler, Jackie McLean, Roland Kirk, Brook Benton, Booker Ervin, Bobby's cousin Bob Cunningham, and LeRoy Williams. In 1969, Bobby expatriated to Paris with Frank Wright, Muhammad Ali, Alan Silva, Noah Howard and Arthur Jones, touring widely. He also played with Steve Lacy and others, and as a soloist. He recorded 54 albums with artists including Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Frank Wright, Booker Ervin. Steve Lacy, and Kali. Z. Fasteau. WAYNE DOCKERY is from a musical family of eight children in Camden, New Jersey. He studied classical voice at Glassboro State College, and began playing jazz bass in Philadelphia nightclubs. After a 2-year stint in the army, Dockery moved to New York in 1966. He has played with Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Fortune, George Benson, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Stanley Turrentine, Hal Galper and Junior Cook. In 1990 he moved to Paris, where he played with James Moody, Benny Golson, and Clark Terry, Wayne tours regularly with Archie Shepp. STEVE McCRAVEN started playing drums in school bands at age 8 in Palo Alto, California. At 10, he moved to New Haven, CT and attended Jimmy Stavris Drum School. He studied at Berklee College of Music with Alan Dawson, and went on to U.of Massachusetts where he studied with Max Roach and Archie Shepp. Steve toured Europe with Marion Brown in 1977, and recorded on Marion's album "La Placita". Expatriating to Paris in 1978, he studied with Philly Jo Jones, Kenny Clarke, Oliver Johnson and George Brown. Since 1988 Steve has been Archie Shepp's drummer. He also works with David Murray and Piotr Wojtasik. Steve played with Sam Rivers for 10 years, as well as with Yusef Lateef, Mal Waldron, Harold Ashby, Freddy Hubbard, Hank Crawford, Charles Tolliver, David 'Fathead' Newman, Sugar Blue, Horace Parlan, Calvin Newborn, Michael Gregory, James Moody, Pee Wee Ellis, Benny Golson, Arthur Blythe, Michel Graillier, Jalal (Last Poets), Kirk Lightsey, Walter Bishop, Jr., Billy Harper, and others. Steve recorded 7 CDs as a leader.
