Naba is one of the key MC’s who worked alongside the much-loved DJ Pogo, to bring the UK underground hip hop scene to the forefront, staging legendary events such as the Award-winning Lyrical Lounge (Jazz Cafe), Battle Scars (hosts of the “8 Mile High” film launch and where he still finds time to judge) and Jonzi D’s Apricot Jam along with other UK rap luminaries such as Ty, and EN4Cers DJ’ Billy Biznizz. It was at such cutting edge, tight knit family-vibed nights that talents such as the hugely successful Estelle first impressed and took centrestage.Naba the artist has been until now, best known as Nabaist, one half of the true school “critically acclaimed” hip hop group Procryptix with Sparkii (Courtney Pine’s collaborator). Their incisive “Inky Fist Assasin”, “Break In A 950’s Shadow” and “Heavy Moves” releases blew up on the hip hop scene, resulting in touring the world to large followings in Japan, France, The Netherlands, Germany, and the USA. Hugely influential with an irrepressible love of hip hop, Naba has toured with UK jazz luminary, Courtney Pine , and also shared the stage with Jazzy Jay, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Gil Scott Heron, Pharcyde, Jeru the Damaga, Last Poets, and DJ Shortee Blitz amongst others. His energetic performances, improvisational skills, and the ability to please any hip hop and jam-funk crowd on the planet, continue to see Naba in demand in the Live arena. Growing up flitting between America’s East Coast to South East London but with Jamaican roots, Naba originated on the UK sound systems inspired by the likes of King Jammy’s and Jack Ruby with his own distinct Transatlantic tones. His next epiphany was when hip hop ignited a new fire, seeing him hook up with influential UK hip hop dons, MC Mello and DJ Pogo as well as exploring his talents from his “Shadyville” Queens, NYC base in the late 90’s. Promoting the BBoy philosophy of unity and self-motivation, Naba twists the elements of high-end lyricism, earthy beats, street philosophy and martial arts with great applomb. Continually evolving through travels,music, people, and mutual respect, Naba embodies the B-Boy philosophy.
