You don't need to listen long to know that Luke Denton is a musician's musician. Experience him live or take a listen to his full-length, just released album and it's all there. He's a "singer-songwriter" who's really a composer (he has a degree in composition). His music is dynamic and interesting, crosses a number of genres and still—mainly—has an inexplicable familiarity that instantly captures listeners. After several years with the Charlotte-based band Miles Apart, Luke recently moved to Austin. To prepare to introduce himself he spent two months producing his self-titled album of original work. "I like to write big," he explains, and the song "Meet You" is a case in point. "I know it's a song musicians will like," he says, "but I also think that for everyone else it'll grow on you." He's right—it does. In its entirety the album reveals Luke's abundance of creative skills, from orchestration to live-wire keys to a signature note-bending, jazz-singer vocal style. Every song is different from every other, tied together by the vocals––and, all that said, it rocks! Listen to "Bitterness" and you quickly pick up the unique quality on the keyboard that makes Luke the player other pianists like to listen to—and watch. That's the thing: although his recording is highly produced, Luke so loves to create that his live performance has another whole dynamic…maybe not so "big," but it rocks, too! He's a new guy with a brand new sound influenced by a lot of solid forerunners: Hornsby, Amos, Newman, Ellington, Krall, Folds, Bach, Joel. At age 26, Luke Denton has all the tools and all the music.
