OBO Sincere Music City Stories Dorian Devins The material on CITY STORIES was recorded on the same two dates as its sister project, IMAGINARY RELEASE. The songs on in this grouping all relate to life the city, in particular New York City where I live. On Sidewalk Waltz, the lyrics came to me as I walked - or, rather, tried to walk - from the Village to midtown on one particularly crowded afternoon. The melody came later, but it had to be a waltz, as it’s also a tiny tribute to Cedar Walton’s Midnight Waltz (also given tribute lyrically at the end of the song). This Happy Madness reflects the happier, more love-inspired version of city life in and makes specific reference to NYC’s Central Park.! Wayward Soul is a beautiful ballad composed by Lou Rainone, which he asked me to write lyrics for. I decided to keep the original title and work from that. The melody suggested an elegy to a city made unrecognizable by soul-less overdevelopment and the loss of character. This Nearly Was Mine, while not specifically about the city, does evoke the beauty of old Broadway tunes. Finally, in Devil May Care, it’s more about the philosophy one needs to endure this city life!——————————————————————————————————— Once again, I thank my amazing band - Richie Vitale, Tom Christensen, Paul Gill, Tom Hubbard, Taro Okamoto, and, going above and beyond all, Lou Rainone, without whom this project would never exist. Thanks also to Chris, Joel, all my friends and family, and the all the others who helped me get this release on the road.
