Head over heels or feet on the ground? Queensland folkstress challenges notions of love with cheeky new tune Infatuation from her upcoming 2013 album Arva Former foreign correspondent turned folk singer Ange Takats will release her sophomore album Arva early next year which will combine 60s folk with 30s jazz – and feature the tongue-in-cheek song Infatuation which is now available as a single on itunes. The song challenges the notion of ‘head-over-heels’ love, with Ange proclaiming that she’d rather be in a relationship that allows her to keep her feet planted firmly on the ground. “I think chick flicks and popular love songs tend to promote this idea of intoxicating ‘can’t live without you’ love. I suppose Infatuation questions how good this type of love is for one’s health,” the Australian songstress said. The song features Andrews Sisters style backing vocals by Ange and was recorded, along with ten other tracks, in Gippsland by J. Walker who produced Paul Kelly’s recently released album Spring And Fall. “I wanted this album to blend the sounds of Americana folk music with oldie world jazz and it was suggested to me that J. Walker was the man for the job. He’d just finished composing the music for the ABC TV series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries which was set in the 1920s, so he was in the perfect headspace,” Ange said. Walker plays vibraphone, double bass, piano, percussion and violin on the track – and gently nudged Ange outside of her comfort zone to record the backing vocals. “We did most of the harmonies on the run in the studio. He was playing these crazy jazz notes on the piano and asking me to mimic them with my voice, which was no easy feat given I’ve had little vocal training and no formal musical education” Ange said. The former Q Song Award winner has had an unusual journey into the world of music – beginning her career ten years ago in Bangkok where she worked as a foreign correspondent during the day and folk singer at night. Arva, an independent release, will be out in early 2013, with a national album tour to follow. It will be available for purchase through itunes, Bandcamp and Ange’s website - www.angetakats.com.au
