简介
Version City Sessions presents a sampling of the goings-on during the first three years at the studio's second location in New Brunswick, NJ, continuing in its firmly established ska, rocksteady, reggae and dub traditions. The program of talented and diverse artists takes the listener on a journey through these styles and their development and influence on other genres of American music. This is a great record to put on at a party when things are still mellow and just getting going. Take your guests on a musical trip departing from the cool, mellow and breezy "Rocksteady Station" with the sweet yet melancholy melodies of Orlando, Florida's Coldspot 8 and an early incarnation of Boston's Westbound Train. Next stop, inner space with the dubbed-out original release of the Version City Rockers' "Fortitude" riddim, appearing here as "Deeper Roots." Jack Ruby is up next as your host to warm you up with the rock-dancehall backing of Skinnerbox through a "Cold Night in the Ghetto." As we pass through Connecticut, we meet the Tile Renters and The Soul Merchants who treat us to their own chunky brands of rock- and pop-influenced reggae. Next stop: Version City, where King Django pulls out the deep deejay skills on another super-trippy dub track. The Inducers then show up with the acoustic chill pill to ease us into the authentic Jamaican vocals of The Speakeasies and Ronnie Davis' mellow traditional ska with Stubborn All-Stars. From there things just get wilder and wilder with Django's Ska/Klezmer Roots & Culture Band followed by his punk-reggae quartet. Bringing up the rear are young ska-punkers Conscious Youth and Steady Ras, followed by the dramatic rock-reggae of ANC and Guerillafinga's acoustic jungle-reggae. Finally we blast off into outer space with the crazy King Django dance-reggae-insanity remix of Heavy Step's "I Don't Believe You Anymore" and the super-fonky, rhythm & blues big-beat you-must-dance-to-this madness of the Version City Rollers "Sugar." Jump and bawl "Rewind!!!"
