Amadu and Mohammed Dumbuya were born in Kono Sefadu, Sierra Leone in the late 70’s. They came from a big family of thirty-three simblings and seven mothers. Their father, Alhaji Yusufu Dumbuya embraced Islam as the religion of the family, he was originally from Telemeley Fulbeh tribe in Guinea. Fulani itself is a dialect from the Fula tribe originally from the Futa Djalon Mountain in Guinea, West Africa. Their mother, Zainab Dumbuya is from the Mandingo tribe in Guinea was born in Sierra Leone. She is currently residing in the Gambia due to the war in Sierra Leone. The twins attended the Albert Academy and later achieved their GCE O levels at Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School in Freetown, Sierra Leone. At the very young age of 10 years old, the twins were first discovered by a friend of the family, D.J. Carlos who worked for the Whisky Agogo Night Club in Koidu town, Sierra Leone. The duo performed “call me” from the group Skyy. From that moment the twins knew they were destined for higher things. They performed where ever they could, they did it all from break dancing in the streets to performing in disco- ramas, clubs, and secondary schools. They also competed in dance competitions all around the country. They did it all and were extremely good at what they did. At the age of 12 and 13 the twins started a group called “Mini Earth Wind & Fire” with that name they performed first in the city of Freetown at City Hall a song called “Saturday Night”. They were introduced on stage by Alan Smith from the Davalgee Brothers. In the late 80’s they were introduced to the Solid Gold Dancers of Sierra Leone by Mustapha Sesay, a choreographer, a friend. Under the tutelage of Mustapha Sesay (Bahbie), the twins learned a great deal about performing on stage as members of the Solid Gold Dancers. The duo performed at the Lagoonda Nightclub with the Solid Gold Dancers. The first song that they performed was “Steppin out” by Kool and the Gang at St. Joseph’s Convent. In 1989 the Fulani recorded their first album title “Twice in Love” in Sierra Leone with the late Amara Kabba, Rapper Frederic Alston in “All Around Girl”, Lasayo on the guitar and Engineered by Andrew. The demo was recorded at Fatais 8-track studio on free street in Freetown. After the demo was recorded the twins decided to travel to the U.S. to make it big. It was Sheku Kallon who sponsored the twins to travel to the United States. When the twins departed Sierra Leone they formed the “Fulatryb” and later “Fulani” in which they started writing and recording their own music. The Fulani Music is a blend of Hip-Hop, Urban, Reggae, R&B, Rap and African Rhythms, this is what makes their style unique and different. Fulani is the latest sensation to hit the American music scene from Africa. Staying true to their heritage and culture the Fulani has created a cross over with their African/Hip-Hop and R&B blend. Fulani's titled debut album "I Miss You" (Em ba mewhyry ma) was released on July 4th, 2000. Following that release, Fulani has performed at places like Bintumani, and Washington, D.C. Fulani open for Keith Murray (rapper) in Fredrick, MD. and Wes Madiko from France. They have also performed in New York, Los Angeles, and Ohio. In 2003, the Fulani released their second album called “Dirty World” (Dugula) on October 24, 2003. The Album release party was hosted by The Voice of America’s Hip-Hop Connection.
