20-year-old artist/producer EAGLEBABEL is shooting for something anthemic here. What admittedly started as him just tinkering around in Garageband and (literally) checking to see what all he could do with his Macbook's internal microphone quickly turned into an obsessive, full-blown musical project. The result is this this single, prosaically yet insidiously dubbed "Mic Check." Candid and edgy at the same time, this is music that tries to get inside of your head, chanting the staple sound test expression "mic check, one two" with a droid's drone and then suddenly going quiet so that you can hear his smiley-faced salvo. And note, EAGLEBABEL isn't just an emcee: in a split-second of decision time, the production of "Mic Check" could have gone the 120 BPM, four-to-the-floor electro route or more sullen, piano-laced songwriting route -- all with the same hands. However, he wanted the quiet impishness and loud controversiality that you can achieve through lyrics more than you can, say, through using the attention span deadening "Nyan Cat" method. So he just went for the rock and spat.

So here is "Mic Check," the single. Musically, it combines the kick-snare minimalism that can be found on The Cool Kids' 2008 The Bake Sale and abundant in much Bay Area blip-hop with traces of the candid, no-effs-giving hip-hop you might hear if Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt or Frank Ocean had the mic in hand. Lyrically, it creeps in and out of braggadocio throwaway puns and loaded subtext you might only catch on the second listen through, a la M.I.A. All in all, though, EAGLEBABEL wants to introduce himself to the music world with something that's iconically EAGLEBABEL. Thus, he temporarily shelves his habit of genre-schizophrenia so that his many musical personalities can have one personality on one project. And as far as "Mic Check" goes, that personality is this: he's in the neighborhood, warning sirens are out, and, the moment that beat drops, all kinds of fiery things being hurled your way.
