When you think of artist like Grover Washington Jr., or Gerald Albright you can close your eyes and become inspired by the amazing sound of smooth jazz. This sound is exactly what inspired Charles Prophet Jr. to pick up the saxophone at the young age of 11. Studying under Detroit jazz masters such as Wendell Harrison and George Benson, he developed a foundation for jazz bebop language. As a student at Wayne State, he majored in jazz studies under the direction of Ernie Rodgers and Russ Miller.

Yearning for more experience, Charles went on to tour nationally with Chicago based band Lubriphonic. Focusing on rhythm and blues the band was comprised of side men from different generes. This band consisted of players from the jazz, blues, and Christian communities to form a sound like no other. They went on to open for artist such as Widespread Panic and Bruce Hornsby just to name a few. With new found rhythmic knowledge, Charles went on to play locally after the band dismantled in 2012.

Nowadays you can find Charles playing with Big Will and the 360 degrees band as well as many other local acts in the Detroit area. He is inspired by a wide range of music as he continues to perform for audiences from jazz to gospel. Charles is currently in the studio working on his first recording, scheduled to be released fall 2016.
