"It is a mystery why Boston-area songwriter, Harriet Goldberg is not on the national scene writing songs for Diana Krall and Michael Buble. Her sophisticated blend of romantic, urbane lyrics with infectious melodies set to swing, bossa nova, or jazz tempos present themselves as standards that could easily have been sung by Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, or Betty Carter. This is the kind of candle-lit jazz you want to have handy for uptown cocktail parties, entertaining dinner guests, or just curling up with that special someone by the fire. "My Time To Fly" has first rate production values, stellar arrangements by Billy Novick, a stable of seasoned musicians, and exceptionally talented local jazz vocalists Krisanthi Pappas, Dane Vannatter, and Lynn Stein, all in top form. Pappas is at her best ever, performing on six of the recording’s dozen cuts. Exhibiting a smokier, more sultry tone here than on her own recordings, she is appealing enough to become a national household name. She shines on "You Won’t Be Breaking My Heart," sinking her teeth into Goldberg’s searing lyrics with bold theatricality. Vannatter doesn’t utter a false note on his four cuts, giving us velvety moments on "And There Is Love," and a warm buttery vibrato, worthy of Mel Torme comparisons, melting over the bittersweet lyrics of "From Time to Time." But it is the songs themselves that shine brightest here, and when Vannatter sings "there’s no denying | I’m ready for this ride," you know it’s Goldberg’s time to fly." "My Time to Fly" is her third CD of original songs written in the style of the old standards - ballads, bossas, and swing. It features two Boston area vocalists, Krisanthi Pappas (who has been compared to Norah Jones and Diana Krall) and Backstage Bistro award winner, Dane Vannatter. New York vocalist, Lynn Stein, sings two of three songs (tracks 9 and 10) that Ms. Goldberg co-wrote with Connecticut songwriter, Robert M. Levy. The nine songs (tracks 1-8 & 12) recorded in Boston include the following extraordinary musicians: Tim Ray on piano, Dave Clark on bass, Bill Reynolds on drums, Ken Cervenka on trumpet and flugelhorn and Billy Novick on tenor sax, alto sax and clarinet. Mr. Novick was also the arranger for these tracks. Boston pianist Doug Hammer accompanies Krisanthi Pappas on track 11, another Goldberg/Levy collaboration. In March of 2012 her song "Spring is Coming Soon" from her new CD is scheduled to be featured on "Californication" (Showtime). Ms. Goldberg’s debut album, "Bring Back the Moonlight," placed fourth in the vocal jazz category of the Just Plain Folks 2004 Music Awards. Her tune, "Suddenly You Walked By" from that CD placed 2nd in the jazz category of the 2002 Billboard Song Contest. Ms. Goldberg's song, "Now and Then," on her "Ocean of Dreams" CD was a finalist in the jazz category of the 2004 USA Songwriting Competition. In March 2011 Ms. Goldberg was one of three songwriters to be featured in Sue Matsuki’s series “People You Should Know” at Don’t Tell Mama in Manhattan. Her work has also been featured at the MAC/ASCAP Songwriters' Showcase, the Metropolitan Club and the NY Sheet Music Society in NYC. In Boston Ms. Goldberg's songs have been featured in Boston Sings Boston III and IV - cabarets of original material by Boston songwriters, in NOMTI's (New Opera & Musical Theater Initiative) 2004 Birth of a Musical Cabaret, at the Regattabar and Scullers, two leading jazz clubs in Boston, as well as at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center.
