From the opening notes, the listener can tell this is a different approach to the traditional Jazz/Pop genre. First, although Flat Third Shout uses the traditional Piano, Drums, Bass and Flute, the sound is a bit different. Secondly, the melodic structure is based on chord modalities and not just rythym. Finally, the band members are all classical musicians. So how did they get here? A little history might reveal the story behind the music and the group.Back in 1989, a group of individuals met at a hotel in Minneapolis, Mn. The reasons for their meeting are irrelevant, but suffice it to say that they stayed in touch and have gathered various techniques, bringing those talents with them. After years of pursuing their individual interests, fate has brought them together in Florida. Rather than just play old standards and dance halls, the group decided to use one of their member's compositions to evoke a light and gregarious approach to jazz, blues, and pop, leaving a little of the traditional and borrowing from Classical structure to blend the result into a unique kind of music. What has emerged then, is a light but structured approach to the Jazz, Blues, Pop idiom. Using syncopated rythym and odd drum patterns along with straight forward Piano and Bass work, the group has managed to come up with an interesting, engaging album. Michelle Ende' the composer, sits on Piano. Dance Williams engages the Flute, Piccolo Flute, Alto Flute. Robert Borgles engages the Bass Paps Bakken engages the Percussion.
