"Black Mountain" is based on the stories I have heard growing up about my paternal great-grandfather. After WWI, he rode horseback over the Appalachian Mountains from southwest Virginia to Harlan County, Kentucky to become a coal miner. He worked his way up the ladder, becoming superintendent of the Coal Mine operation there. The track title is the name of the mountain closest to where he lived and is actually the highest peak in the state of Kentucky. The song draws from the lessons he passed on to his son, my grandfather, about the hardships of being a coal miner and why he should leave the area to make a better life for himself.
