Herman Melville said, "It's better to fail at originality than succeed at imitation." More than any other time in the past I'm not trying to imitate or innovate, I'm just trying to be honest. I don't think most artists make a creative choice to become a specific style musician. When it happens naturally that's great. The work of an artist is to be faithful to the inner voice, to follow their unique instincts. That's a big enough challenge. When you try to fit in to a mold in order to please a certain taste or section of people it can get confusing. You can drown out the inner voice completely. Then you risk becoming a poser. The other side of this is that no one makes music in isolation. It's very natural to want to imitate what we love, what moves us. That's the nature of what it is to be influenced. So you have these two things in tension, or balance: Following you're unique instincts but giving yourself permission to sound a bit like your influences.
