This collection of songs that I put together while I was going from 19 to 21 really helped me go through that phase of "who am I in this world". Having now listened to this record of mine for so many years I've decided that even though it's a recording that is definitely lo-def it helps add to the power of the songs. Much like how we are at that age, showing promise though our youth. This is mainly why I've never attempted to re-record them, to professionalize them would seem almost indecent. I wanted to keep the raw and very personal sound that they convey. I am by no means a guitar wizard, yet I feel my songs can really get into your skin and really get a reaction. Usually a good reaction I'd hope. My music is definitely mine. I record and write by myself primarily though on Bay Rum I threw in some intentional and some not so intentional bits from friends into my songs. Sometimes it seems that a song needs to be a collage of sorts and then sometimes a song definitely wants to do its own thing. Like with Red Rocks I brought together a poem from The Maxx and mixed it with my own guitar work and a chorus while also having an episode from The Simpsons playing in the background. Ah, The Simpsons were such a big part of my life growing up. With the song A Note, I had some excellent voicemail messages at that time that I really wanted to share with the world so I just used the same collaging principal that I had used on Red Rocks. I do swear. Not nearly as much now as I did when I was younger but I did and to not include it in my songs would really be like me trying to show the world someone I was not. It's not so bad with the exception of the song Orlando where the chorus would definitely make the proverbial church lady wag her disapproving finger at me. Still it's not as bad as Violent Femmes "Add It Up" but around there. Other than Orlando however the other songs that had to be labeled "Explicit" are just for conversational swearing really, if that makes sense. Throughout my life I would continue to write many more songs and hopefully get more of them up here, but this group of songs really go together so well I feel. Just like the group of friends that you always like to hangout with while your growing up. I feel these songs have that same kind of similarity.
