Performing Bach on the Double Bass has become the new benchmark for technique, tone, and musicality. What once was a rare occasion for such an unwieldy instrument, has become the norm as many instrumentalists have adapted the Unaccompanied Suites for their own repertoire. In this album, the 1st and 2nd Suites are recorded at pitch ( transcribed up one octave on the bass to sound the same register as the cello version) whereas the 3rd Suite is recorded to sound a 4th lower from the original. A rare occasion to hear the Double Bass resonate with such a soloistic fashion, but yet the range of the bass adds an element of power and depth. Had j.S. Bach knew that the double bass would someday be capable of executing such sublime melodic and harmonic contours, he would have surely written this music to be exclusively performed on Double Bass.
