Adam Maalouf is a Lebanese-American musician, multi-instrumentalist and composer. Through the influence of many of the world's musical styles, Adam's unique compositional and improvisational approach forms a common thread between the cultures of the East and West. Blurring the lines between World Music, Jazz, and Electronica, Adam composes and performs using unique instruments such as the modern phenomenon the Hang Drum, Cello, World Percussion, Marimba and Electronics. Multi-Instrumentalist Adam Maalouf is a performer, composer, educator and musical messenger. As a specialist in world percussion, Adam produces his own music live and in the studio, in which he incorporates instruments such as the hang drum, cello, voice, world percussion, marimba, and electronics. Adam's journey as a musician began at the age of 3, in his hometown of Greenville, SC. After experiencing a gamut of instrumental training that included a classical education on the piano and cello, Adam's eyes were opened to the infinite world of percussion. Since then, he has performed everywhere from the world's finest concert halls and museums, to summer music festivals, yoga and dance studios, public schools, and homeless shelters. Adam's first experience hand drumming was on the Middle Eastern Derbeke Drum (Doumbek) during his childhood visits to Koura, Lebanon. While attending the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, Adam became the pupil and friend of Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy, mridangam master and specialist in South Indian Percussion. Rohan had a profound effect on Adam's budding ability in rhythm, composition and improvisation. Adam's unique interpretation of the tradition of World Music is channeled through genre-bending compositions for solo and ensembles. "Far From Home" is Adam Maalouf's debut album as a solo artist, and through cello, hang drums and percussion from many musical styles of world, Adam weaves his performances carefully, taking the listener on an epic journey through the different stages of his musical creations. In Adam's music you will hear influences from many of the world's musical traditions including those from India, the Middle East, Spain, Africa, and South America. As a collaborator, Adam has worked with countless ensembles and renowned musicians, including The Hampton Brothers, Common Pulse, Jamey Haddad, Raquy Danzinger, Suzanne Sterling, Morley, Flames and Frequencies, Farah Siraj, Tom Rossi, Will Johnson, The Asheville Percussion Festival Ensemble, Pallavi, The Gil Evan's Project, and The Michigan Arabic Orchestra. Adam has also spearheaded several collaborations with Dancer's Dominique Warfield and Alexandra Glover. Adam has been the Technical Director of the Asheville Percussion Festival since its inception and is an active free-lancer and teacher in New York City. As an educator, Adam has given workshops and master classes in Cross-cultural percussion, Indian Drumming, and Middle Eastern Drumming at The Eastman School of Music, The University of Rochester, Asheville Percussion Festival, and The Mendocino Music and Dance Retreat. He currently holds a residency teaching Cello and African Drumming to 8-12 year olds in Crown Heights, Brooklyn NY.
