The Atlas Maior EP is the result of the group's first studio recording session. This album explores the sonic dimensions of melody and rhythm, combining alto saxophone, 'ud (Middle Eastern lute), and a variety of traditional percussion instruments. The Atlas Maior EP was composed, arranged and produced by Atlas Maior and recorded in Mohr Music Studios during Winter of 2011. The group is an integral piece of the emerging and vibrant world, traditional and international live music scene in Austin, TX, and is actively performing in Central Texas, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. The EP is an exploration of sonic textures that developed from initial musical interactions between Charlie Lockwood ('ud), Joshua Thomson (alto saxophone & flutes) and Ethan Vlah (percussion). Combining the sounds and articulations of several musical traditions from across the globe, the Atlas Maior EP reaches across geographic boundaries for a translation that maps diverse sonic coordinates. This sound has brought the band recognition on KUT 90.5FM’s “Austin Music Minute”, and Atlas Maior invites further media reviews of the group and the Atlas Maior EP. This album has received radio play on KUT 90.FM Austin, KVRX 91.7FM Austin, KRTU 91.7FM San Antonio, WEMU 89.1FM Ypsilanti, MI, and KZSC 88.1FM Santa Cruz, CA. All songs written and arranged by Atlas Maior. “Object or a Face (Hijaz)" contains an arrangement of "Karsilama (Anwar)", originally recorded by Eddie "The Sheik" Kochack on Strictly Bellydancing vol. 6.
