As a longtime producer for vocal groups, Jason Hunter was tired of hearing every San Francisco band bury their singer’s voice with heavy guitars and crashing drums, and wanted to hear more music that highlighted the power of live vocal harmonies. In 2011, Jason founded Great Highway with the goal of building stripped-down pop-rock that would have stronger harmonies than any other Bay Area band. In 2013, Jason decided to combine his talent for arranging vocal harmonies with his lifelong passion for electronic music. With the addition of DJ Meredith Whelan, singer Sarah Morgan, and guitarist Sean McAllister, Great Highway began performing using looped electronic beats and live four-part vocals. This balance of crisp electronic arrangement and the drama of perfectly-blended harmonies is what makes Great Highway stand out in a sea of fuzzy, lo-fi rock music. Great Highway’s sound incorporates the lush, moody vibe of The Xx, the powerhouse male-female vocals of The Naked & Famous, and the oddball pop arrangements of The New Pornographers, to create music that is immediately likable and infinitely interesting. Their fourth album "Industrial Love Scene" was recorded and mixed in Jason’s home studio, and mastered by renowned mastering engineer Michael Romanowksi (DeVotchKa, Matt Nathanson, dredg). “It became about young hearts lost in the kind of personal apocalypse that happens after love fails them and leaves their innocence shattered,” says Jason.” It's a study in how suddenly ordinary a person can seem, after they fall from the pedestal you put them onto; and how mechanical and un-special love becomes when it fails you.”
