简介

The band's first record, produced by Washington DC rock icon Mark Noone, was released in 1991. You'll hear the original Grandsons with 'Dancin' Bill Hansen on bass and vocals and Jon Danforth on all manner of drum alongside stalwarts Alan MacEwen (guitar, vocals, trumpet) and Chris Watling (saxophone and accordion... but not at the same time). The foursome are joined by special guest grandsons Diana Keene on pedal steel guitar, Carol Arthur on steel drums, and New Orleans' habitue Derek Huston on baritone saxophone. -------------------- There weren't digital downloads in 1991. There weren't digital recording studios. There was a little band from the DC area (the band house was in Arlington at the old Glebe Road) that fashioned itself not as old, but as of the now they were creating. Listening to the tracks now reminds us of a more innocent time...and the Grandsons balanced innocence and cheekiness so well (as they still do today!). "Don't Turn Your Back" is the rocking blueprint of their early sound featuring the tight harmony vocals of Alan and Bill, the honking tenor sax of Chris and the sterling steel of frequent guest Diana Keene (so frequent that she had her own place on the bandstand). Other highlights are Bill's ode to no good - "The Road to No Good". Chris Watling started his conceptual streak of beach-based voodoo-infused instrumentals with "Surf-O-Rama" - it sounds just like you think it should. The record's two covers stand as a testament to their excellently unrefined taste, Gene Vincent's heartbreaking ballad "The Day the World Turned Blue" and the walloping polka "Silly Dilly" (to this day it is an occasional fan request). And as a BONUS, we've added their contribution to the Gene Vincent tribute "Turning the World Blue" - a 1996 re-recording of "The Day the World Turned Blue".
