简介
Born John Bemdoo Sar, Bem is the first of five siblings. A father who is currently a Dean of management studies at the Benue State University, of Benue State (his home state), and a mother who is a retired Civil Servant are both practicing animal farmers. He started an early education in Zaria, Kaduna State where he was born and moved, with his family, to Benue where he graduated from the state University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. Ironically, Bem grew up disliking music. This was probably due to the kind of collection his father was fond of playing around the house which comprised of old classics of Sinatra, Nat King Cole and the likes; a few African bands and artists like Osibisa, Maryam Makeba, Hugh Masakela; jazz cuts of George Benson, Django Reinhardt and others; as well as the regular funk masters of the 70s and 80s. it was not until he first saw the Jackson 5, live , that the art of music hit him like a bug. His father taught him the fisrt notes he would know on the guitar and that was it. Nothing. Nothing else happened for the next 12 years apart from listening to the radio and singing along with the hits as the years went bye. Suffering from deep depression, mostly caused by feelings of being left behind, as he didnt pass his secondary school final exams on the first round, Bem turned to writing short stories and prose to find release. It was at this time that a friend casually suggested that he channel this talent to songwriting. It took 9 months to write the first song, but it was the beginning of a story not yet ended. It was the middle 90s and gangster rap was in and naturally Hip Hop was the way to go. Finding this genre over flooded, he decided to drop rap and stick to singing and picked up the guitar again in 2001. Right after graduation, he spent a year working in a bank to fulfill his service to the nation, and then took up a position as Marketing Officer in a real estate firm. This job only lasted two months before he opted out to face his one true love, music. He soon banded with his friend Age Beeka and really learnt to play. Together they gigged among the diplomatic community in Abuja, frequenting the British council, American village, as well as several shows and parties around the city. Being a self taught guitarist and vocalist, his music has often experienced drastic changes. Among his many influences are artists like Fred Hammond, Babyface, Stevie Wonder, Earl Klugh, Christopher Bono, Prince, Yousou Ndour, Seal, Snoop Dogg, Osibisa and Aerosmith and mreo. Drawing from such an eclectic background, his passion for strings, lessons and inspirations from his past Bem has blended these elements with an experimental approach to develop his own flavor of soulful Rock and Gospel music. His first fruit, independently released in 2005 with first cut of the single-bound record, something good, climbing to the top of various radio chart shows and the video doing the same on TV. Im bound by the meaning of my name which means peace spreader, he says to spread the message of peace. I believe that if your life has not profoundly inspired others to live on a higher plane than this world offers, then youve just wasted your time. Im so glad God gave me such an effective means to affect my world. Currently he is living in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria and he is enjoying favorable rotation on both radio and TV stations in Nigeria and building quite a portfolio performing at various venues.
