简介
With her sophomore EP Raat Rani, Kiss Nuka surprises the listener with a sonically distinct exploration from her debut EP Serpentine, staying true to her artistic direction and /refusing to be put in a box. With Raat Rani, Kiss Nuka takes a brazen approach to her sound, weaving tribal beats, growling basslines, warm melodic elements, animal calls and earth sounds into influences from trip-hop, electro, four on the floor, and drum and bass, into dance music’s boundless energy and dub’s psychedelia, transforming everything in its path. The EP kicks off with War Cry, a powerful 160 slammer that twists and turns as it builds, surprising you at every turn. Kiss Nuka places a powerful message of the oneness of nature and humanity at the top on The Seed, a four on the floor featuring live cojones and a vocal sample from an online interview of Indian scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate, ecofeminist and anti-globalisation author Dr. Vandana Shiva. Jashn (Urdu for celebration), is a celebration of tribal percussion infused with subtle cinematic strings and the Indian santur’s melodic flourishes, transporting one through different emotional planes before the driving earthy grooves ground you again to the primal glee of dancing. Throughout the EP, a near-constant sway of low-end keeps the body moving while an engulfing myriad of percussions pitter-patter around you. The joy of folk music blooms with Harvest, a Bihu folk song from the North-East of India, where the power and prowess of the Assamese folk singer Zublee Baruah shines within the unabashed grit of Kiss Nuka's grungy basslines and groovy production elements, bringing two different worlds of music into harmony. Like the night-time fragrance of Raat Rani, the Indian name for the jasmine flower that blooms only at night, a reinvigorating rhythmic frenzy blooms from the ambient space of Kiss Nuka’s reverberating vocals on the final track, encapsulating the EP, reminding oneself that only when something is broken does the light shine through.
