I am a child of the 80s. I wore out albums by artists as varied as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Dire Straits, Aerosmith, The Cure, Guns 'N' Roses, Kenny Rogers, The Clash, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, The Cars, New Order, Run-DMC, and The Smiths. In college, I cranked up U2, Oasis, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer, and Alanis Morissette albums in my car, singing along to every lyric. When I realized there was music to be heard before I was born, I listened to Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Del Shannon, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. My music is a reflection of my appreciation of these amazing artists. At the end of the day, I don't care about genre--I care about how the music makes me feel. If it strikes a chord within my soul, I will wear out a track, playing it over and over, adding it to the playlist that runs continuously through my head. Ultimately, what it comes down to is the songwriting. All the catchy guitar riffs, driving rock beats, and slickly produced hits can't touch a beautifully written tune. It is the words that keep me awake at night, forcing me to pick up my guitar, grab my pencil and notebook, and pray that I can create my own bit of truth for others to hear and appreciate.
