To gain inclusion among one’s favorites, several tests must be passed. When it comes to four-part Gospel singing, the Calvarymen are my hands-down winners. They consistently score high marks on blend, interpretive solos, adventuresome arrangements, strong and meaningful lyrics, being believable, respecting their audiences and living personal lives above reproach in the off hours. The Calvarymen accomplish another purpose that is hard to specifically categorize, and even harder to attain through practice. Their music gets to the very depth of my being. They speak to the secret place of my heart, bringing comfort, hope, encouragement and joy. That’s personal and it doesn’t happenoften. But the singing of the Calvarymen speaks to me at a level that singers seldom reach.
