简介
This soundtrack is the result of a month spent in Bali researching and recording music of the island. Thanks to photographer Gil Marais, who has lived in Ubud for over 30 years, we had unprecedented access to village rituals which are usually closed to outsiders. These left a profound impact on the composer, and were a strong influence on the composition of the soundtrack. In some cases I was able to work with groups of Balinese musicians, and deconstruct their rhythmic elements to be used in new compositions. I also enlisted a Balinese composer, I Wayan Gde Yudane to compose a string quartet interpretation of his Gamelan music, and I composed music for Gamelan ensemble, in a reversal of traditional Western and Balinese compositional duties (both "Royal Cremation" and "Burning Steer" were composed by Yudane, I added orchestration to the latter). The soundtrack was a complement to the astoundingly beautiful visuals of the film. Guests musicians include: Robert Mark (percussion) and Valeria Burman (flute).
