"Wildly eclectic but consistently absorbing." ~ Baltimore City Paper The Dark Side of the Moon like you’ve never heard it before. More than forty musicians, all from Baltimore. Classic Pink Floyd, thoroughly reimagined–just in time for the 40th anniversary of the original. This is not your typical “cover” project or note-for-note recreation. Instead, it features fresh new arrangements: surprising grooves, eclectic instruments, gorgeous vocals. Glimmers of rock, jazz, classical, hip-hop, gospel, even opera. A TRUE PROG-ROCK AMALGAMATION! “Breathe,” “Money,” “Us and Them”….hear all these immortal hits as if they're new again! ABOUT THE MUSICIANS Sandy Asirvatham is co-creator/chief music arranger. For our new takes on old Pink Floyd songs, she’s been inspired by her own eclectic performing background and guided by the diverse sounds and skills brought by each of our participating musicians. Sandy was a respected journalist and award-winning City Paper columnist before launching a second career as a pianist and singer-songwriter. Of the eclectic jazz-pop songs on her first disc, MEMOIR, dj Michael Buckley says, “When it comes to crossing invisible musical boundaries, Sandy Asirvatham is an innovator.” The idea for Mobtown Moon came to her while listening to the original Pink Floyd recording during long treadmill training sessions for a triathlon in 2009. ellen cherry (*lowercase intentional!*) is co-creator/visual alchemist. While having a strong hand in the sound of the record, she is also in charge of determining the look, feel, and overall aesthetic vibe of our Mobtown Moon products as well as the our stage shows. ellen has recorded and released original music continuously since 1997. In 2009, ellen composed an original score for Nana Project’s shadow puppet piece, “Alonzo’s Lullaby”, about a circus train wreck south of Chicago, in 1918, which was awarded the prestigious UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence. In 2012, she released the EP “Please Don’t Sell the Piano” produced by Baltimore songwriter Caleb Stine. ellen also wrote, performed and recorded an original song commissioned by the FOX Networks that was nominated for an Emmy in 2010. In 2011, she was awarded both a “b” grant award by the Baker Artist Awards, as well as the inaugural Semmes G. “Buck” Walsh award for excellence in music. Sandy and ellen recruited artists from rock/pop, jazz, hip hop, bluegrass, and classical music scenes to participate in the project including Cris Jacobs of The Bridge and Cris Jacobs Band: blues/gospel powerhouse Lea Gilmore; jazz bass clarinetist and composer Todd Marcus; singer and multi-instrumentalist Brian Simms; opera master Vincent Stringer; harmonizing folk-rock trio We're About 9; Jen Smith and Scott Smith of Naked Blue; and 9 members of the children's music program OrchKids.
