简介
George Hughes is an alternative acoustic singer/songwriter. His music melds a lifetime of eclectic influences - ranging from old time country and blues to Seattle grunge, James Joyce and Leonard Cohen – into an electrifying sound that is both evocative and fresh. The aggressive acoustic guitar underscores a voice that ranges from a grungy blues growl straight into a silky smooth falsetto on original songs that cover emotional gamut from death to watching girls on the beach. Regardless of his lyrical intentions, each audience member can hear an echo of their own perspective in his voice. George's musical education began early. By the age of seven, he was playing guitar under the watchful eye of his mother, a country singer from Texas. She introduced him to the greats of that genre including Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Patsy Cline. However, her love for great music would not allow her to leave it at that. She rounded out his early listening years with John Coltrane, Nat King Cole, Muddy Waters, Bobby Womack, and Son House. With such an early education, George's sense of musicianship and eye for musical detail seemed inevitable. The next major musical influence came from the Seattle scene of the 90s. Working in that flourishing musical environment not only grounded George in the aggressive alternative sound of that era but also gave him the opportunity to play venues with many national acts. He has played venues with Ben Harper, Rufus Wainwright, Tracy Chapman, Vonda Shepherd, Julia Fordham, Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs), The Pixies, the Fixx on acoustic reunion and Live. Over the last 10 years, George has been forging a new sound from the diverse foundations of his past. In October of 1999, he marked the beginning of this sound with a vocal/acoustic guitar EP entitled “Lunch with Monks”. In January of 2003, he followed that up with a full length CD called “If it’s alright with you...”This was a heavier, densely orchestrated project that drew on the talents of a number of local top guns in the studio. With David Ellefson (Megadeth and F5) on bass, David Small (Knee Deep and F5) on Drums, Fate Taylor (Ashes of Eden and Flip off the Sky) on guitar and John Gray – a Gold Record winning engineer – George was free to focus on crafting the quality sound that he was after. In 2004, he appeared on the Shut Eye Records compilation, Buzzlighter 7 that was in rotation on college stations around the country. Daze B 4, his current EP, includes a brand new mix of songs that showcase his signature style. Mike Bolenbach, owner of Full Well Recording Studio and co founder of The Plump Tones, provided his engineering talents and acted as co-producer. The CD stars a constellation of talented, guest musicians including Jimi Powers on guitar, Jeff Leece on bass, Russ Covner (Flipskirt, The Jeff Dahl Band, and Bitter Allegiance) and Phil Janzen (The Plump Tones) on drums. Mindy Nilson of Twig also made a special appearance to duet on one song. The CD was officially launched on October 3, 2009. To support this new release, George is currently booking acoustic gigs that include original material as well as a wide array of covers.
