This album was originally intended to be a traditional blues album, but I couldn't keep out my pop and country influences as I wrote. My desire was to create some original music for my three-piece acoustic band, the Patio Drive Band, but as I added instruments in the production process, the songs went beyond the scope of an acoustic trio. At that point I started the Matt Bennett Blues Band in order to play these songs live. This is turning out well, as I was able to add a second keyboard player to cover extra parts while I am singing or out attending to the crowd. The sound of my music has been compared to Phil Collins, Steely Dan, Gary Moore, John Mayer, and Billy Joel. The diverse nature of the songs are glued together through my blues influence that I tried to showcase, at least a little bit, on every track. Both of my bands now play these songs, and they sound gloriously different with each band. It has been a lot of fun exploring what each of these songs can be. Two of these songs started in high school for me - I wrote them as poems and have been sitting on them for over 25 years. I figured it was time to get them out there. I see most of my songs that way - poetry set to music. Fade Away and Step up My Game were the high school poems, but I try to keep my lyrics poetic in all my writing. I think most songs should be just as interesting to read as to hear.
