KING KONG COMPANY Critics and fans have been raving about King Kong Company in blogs, in tweets and in the fields of Irelands biggest festivals. The seven piece who sound more like a DJ than a band, have been described as BRILLIANT (TheSkinny.co.uk), INCREDIBLE (State.ie), OUT OF THIS WORLD (Joe.ie), ARTIST OF THE WEEK (Irish Times) FESTIVAL FAVOURITES (Nialler9.com) and, not to overuse the word; BRILLIANT by Goldenplec.com. If you have been to a festival in Ireland over the last three years, chances are you have seen, heard or heard about King Kong Company. In 2015 they closed the Salty Dog stage at Electric Pincic, packed the main tent at Body & Soul and played countless festivals across the country. All the while building the anticipation for the release of their self-titled debut album in December. To some people the band came from no-where, to others, the debut album has been almost 20 years in the making. King Kong Company formed in 1996 when a bunch of college mates got together and started ripping up the clubs of Ireland. Version one culminated with slots at Homelands, The Red Box and a gig in front of 25,000 people on New Year’s Eve 2000 in Waterford. Life happened, things changed and the band decided to split. Over the course of the next decade, things changed again and, after a Wikipedia entry suggested the band were getting back together in 2010, the seeds of a comeback gig were sown. Being King Kong Company, this one off gig had to be different. For one they had to play new tracks and the audience had to know the tracks before the gig. So throughout 2011 they released one new video every month on YouTube and played that one gig in February 2012. Over 700 people packed into The Forum in Waterford that wet and cold February evening. That one gig became a few gigs which became more gigs and eventually King Kong Company found themselves selling out The Button Factory in Dublin and that YouTube channel now has over 200,000 views. So to whoever wrote that Wikipedia entry, the band and countless fans up and down the country owe you one big thank you!
