简介
This music began as a contribution to 'Kafka’s Wound': A Digital Literary Essay created by Will Self, a subjective examination of Franz Kafka’s work through the perspective of his story, 'A Country Doctor' (1919) and its gruesome imagery. The essay was commissioned by the London Review of Books, and involved web developers, editors, researchers, academics. The team employed digital media to create a new form of literary essay that intersperses music, animation, film and text inspired by Kafka's story. “It became an exercise in extended collaboration in thought in real time” Self has commented. Peter Wiegold writes: Kafka would have grown up surrounded by Jewish Klezmer music. I’ve always had a love for this passionate, joyous music, but also its troubled side - to the point of trauma, almost hysteria. So I wanted to create a dream-like atmosphere, reflecting the disturbed, 'expressionist' nature of Kafka’s world - Vienna and Prague – on the cusp of the 20th Century. The music was recorded at Brunel University on June 22nd, 2012. Simple versions of traditional klezmer tunes were spontaneously scored, and then directed live into improvised transformations. The spirited, freewheeling playing of the band pushes the music to unearth the unconscious, the raw fear so graphic in Kafka and his cryptic, hallucinatory tale. For this cd the original recordings have been remixed and restructured to make a new, extended ‘essay’. Will Self selected the texts from three sources: Kafka’s 'A Country Doctor', Kafka’s diaries, and his own essay 'Kafka's Wound'. "post-fusion.. .the thing is, notes inégales completely transcend common notions of bringing different stylistic aspects together... they're integrated to the point where they are simply a new animal".
