简介
A native of Dublin, Ireland, Marina has had a lifelong relationship with music. “The spirit has been in my family for generations” she says recalling her grandfather who’d played the mandolin. During her childhood, Marina enjoyed listening to her parent’s records which included albums by Eartha Kitt and Elvis Presley, and many of the great Irish folk groups, including The Dubliners and The Furey Brothers. But nothing compares to the influence of her father, Leo, a well-known mandolin and banjo player, and balladeer. “There were many ‘sessions’ in our house when I was growing up and some of the most talented folk singers of the era sang the best folk songs right in our own living room.” Marina’s first instrument was the mandolin, which she’d picked up as a child. By the time she was in her teens, Marina was performing traditional Irish music with the Raheny Band. Along the way she began singing, eventually appearing with the Raheny Band in such venues as The National Concert Hall in Dublin and on Irelands foremost talk show, The Late Late Show. With the Raheny Band, she’d competed in all of the major Irish music festivals. It was Marina’s singing that propelled The Raheny Band to first place in the Annual Folk Festival in Letterkenny, Donegal in 1986. Marina also belonged to the folk group Casanna and has performed in Dublin's famous ballad houses with some of Irelands best-known folk groups, including Liffy Side. With the intention of one day developing poems into songs, Marina began writing poetry. But performing for live audiences remained her focus. By 1997, she’d established herself as a singer and guitarist on the New York music scene and had expanded her repertoire to include rock. “But I soon realized that I couldn’t keep covering other artist’s music. No matter how good their songs were and no matter what spin we’d given them, they were still someone else’s sound.” Focusing on poetry, Marina began writing songs of her own. After a couple of years, she had the makings of an album. “I’ve really enjoyed combining my passions: stringed instruments, singing, and poetry. And, in producing Rosy Remedy I was able to span the breadth of music including folk, country, ballads, and soft rock.” All of the songs on Rosy Remedy are accented by Marina’s original lyrics, her earthy vocals and rhythm guitar, and the sound of three seasoned rock musicians: Bob Berzack on lead guitar, Tom Spagnardi on bass, and Steve Feldman on percussion/drums. Marina currently lives in New York City with her husband, Steve (Cymbalsky), and their son.
