In the summer and early autumn of 1781, Joseph Haydn began work on the six quartets we know today as Op. 33, or more eruditely as Hoboken III: 37-42. They are also known popularly as the “Jungferne” quartets, the “Russian” quartets and “gli scherzi”. The Eybler Quartet members are united by their unquenchable passion for exploring works of the first century and a half of the string quartet repertoire, with a healthy attention to lesser-known composers such as their namesake, Joseph Leopold Edler von Eybler. The group plays on instruments appropriate to the period of the music it performs. The Toronto-based ensemble’s live performances have consistently garnered praise as “glowing and committed”, “spirited” and “lively and energizing”.
