This song was inspired by the letter written by Patrice Lumumba, Congolese independence leader and first legally elected Prime MInister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to his wife Pauline Opangu while imprisoned. His government was deposed in a coup soon after winning independence from Belgium in June 1960 and he was later killed. The message he gave to his fellow countrymen is timeless, and thus applies to today's situation in the DRC. Proceeds made from this song will go directly to the Congolese Genocide Awareness Inc. (CGA), a nonprofit organization with the mission to generate worldwide awareness on the effects of war in general and civil war specifically. Particularly its mission is to generate awareness around the reoccurrence of the rape of Congolese men and women and the exploitation and killing of children. CGA does this work because they are our mothers, daughters, sisters and children who are violated and oppressed. CGA spreads awareness by refusing to keep silent, exposing the truth, and denouncing the war. CGA promotes awareness by engaging and mobilizing supporters who can advocate internationally as well as within the Congo.
