It relates the many forms this affection assumes in each lover's eyes as well as the eyes of others. New personas are created within oneself in reaction to this romance. Others in turn unlock characters within you that you never knew you could be. Though many of the poem's references are personal, perhaps we may all find ourselves in several, if not one, of the many pairs of this polymorph's shoes. It goes even deeper than that personal basement where you hide significant life experiences, which are most often forgotten, go un-discussed, or are bypassed.
