I’d like to offer my special thanks to Ted Curtis for his unflinching work on this project. When I mentioned wanting to do these sessions “live” he flinched not and went straight to work. Recruiting some of the most amazing mic’s and gizmos, I have not seen to date. We ran the tunes upwards of three times in most cases, but in some...once was enough. I was floored when Lee Rucker showed up with pieces of loose paper full of ink in his arms which was to be our horn parts. Hearing those parts for the first time as the sessions unfolded was part of the magic. Special thanks to Lee! We finished the tracking in a mere 3 days and were exhausted at its completion. However, Ted worked tirelessly beyond tracking to “tame the beast “he had now created which was a true live studio recording. The piano, bass and horns were in the same room, gently separated by dividers or pointing to flat walls. Which made good fun of trying to establish levels on any three of those components. I was in the vocal booth and Justin was in the big drum room with an array of wonderful mics at the ready. In conceiving the project songs, I had to rely heavily on Dennis and Chris to help bring my ear ghosts to life. Though I could hear the songs I was writing inside my head in terms of melody and groove, I had no idea how things would sound once I got them into Dennis’s hands. A special thanks to Dennis and Chris for your patience and willingness to write with me and share your gifts. Lastly, to Ed and Justin. Your energy, your energy! Not to mention your wonderful talents and perceptions. Thanks to you both for making these recordings very special.
