There really wasn’t any big, over-arching plan for this recording. The idea was to get together, start playing, and see what developed. I brought in a few pieces that I thought might work in a duo setting, but most of what you hear was completely improvised. One of us would come up with a title or mood, maybe suggest a tempo, and then we started playing. There’s a bit of studio legerdemain on a couple of the pieces, and Tom had to exorcise the thunderstorm that showed up during “9/15/45”, but in general, what you hear is what occurred in the moment. Back in 19&*$, when I first asked John if I could study improvisation with him, I couldn't have imagined that it would be the beginning of a 40 year relationship. John has been a primary musical inspiration for most of my adult life, and I'm honored to count him as a friend and colleague. These dialogues finally gave me the chance to say "thank you" to someone who has made such a difference in my musical life. We hope that you enjoy these musical conversations as much as we did.
