Levity is a collaborative EP with three of my favorite singers that I am also lucky to count as friends. I recorded each song at the same small subterranean project studio in the LES of Manhattan called Rivington 66. I sent the instrumental recordings to each singer, including a little fragment of a vocal phrase and lyrics to help catalyze the creativity. Levity was written by me and Sarah K. Pedinotti, an amazing musician and singer in NYC. She has a phenomenal band called LIP TALK and is also very active in other bands such as Kalbells and Okkervil River. For The Best was co-written by Angelica Bess, an amazing singer, also part of Kalbells, who has collaborated with a plethora of amazing musicians such as Chrome Sparks and Machine Drum and has a long standing band called Body Language. I sent Angelica the instrumental, where I was trying to evoke the irreverent optimism of the 90's with a subtle nod to New Radicals but mostly aping the synth palette of UK Jungle legend Goldie, and almost immediately Angelica had the hook figured out and the rest of the song came together almost effortlessly. Rejection Therapy was written with my old friend Sandu-Ndu who is part of the singular and excellent Oakland based band, Bells Atlas. Sandu and Bells Atlas' drummer Geneva Harrison, were in NYC a few years ago and we made time to record some music. Sandu has a very unique and evocative approach to singing and I think this is a wonderful representation of her ethereal magic. I really enjoy collaboration and try to draw from a wide array of influences, I this EP is an effective glimpse into the world of Trivial Shields.
