简介
Mya Adriene Byrne is a poet, award-winning performing songwriter, and activist. A proud trans woman, she established her solo folk career in 2012 after years of performing with roots-rock band, the Ramblers, opening for acts such as Levon Helm. A longtime member of the Americana/folk community in the US, her debut solo album was produced by Neale Eckstein (Vance Gilbert, Brother Sun) and is both a celebration and a statement of a long journey of discovery. Performing both acoustic and electric, Mya's music has been compared to artists like Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, and Neil Young. In 2014, she was chosen to perform at WNYC's famed "Battle of the Boroughs", was named one of the "30 Most Promising Acts in NYC" by The Aquarian, showcased at two Northeast Regional Folk Alliance events (a formal showcase at the NERFA One-Day in April and a Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase at the 3-day fall conference), performed at "On Your Radar", hosted by WFUV's John Platt, was a featured artist at the People's Music Network conference, and had her stage acting debut at New York's famed Dixon Place for the Hot! Festival. This fall, Mya was honored to share her story of losing and regaining her voice on Making Contact, a nationally syndicated public radio program. This show (along with an on-air interview with legendary folk DJ Ron Olesko and subsequent article in SingOut! led to Mya becoming a public speaker, working with several universities, creating and presenting feminist educational programs for students, as well as facilitating songwriting and activism workshops. Rounding out the year, Mya was featured on the November cover of Acoustic Live, as well as in The Deli and the Advocate. In December 2014 she opened up for personal hero Joseph Arthur at Outpost in The Burbs (Montclair, NJ), and in January 2015, she released her new CD to a packed house at Rockwood Music Hall's Stage 2 in New York. Mya has an exciting schedule for 2015, including an appearance at the Muses In The Vineyard Women's Music Festival, while also accompanying many artists on stage and in the studio, and touring in support of her new record.
