Caroling becomes everyone -- and shantymen are no exception to the rule. Even though our voices, as rough as the sea-songs we sing every day, may sound conspicuously coarse in the context of the Christmas repertoire, carols themselves remain unalterably warm and soothing. Like sea-shanties, capable of transforming a group of individual seamen into a seamless crew, also Christmas carols have the power of uniting individual people into a warm-hearted, welcoming humankind. Whether we celebrate Christmas at home by the tree or whether we enjoy the communal spirit of the holiday in the ship's messroom, when singing together we miraculously raise above all divisions. Such a mankind is strong enough to withstand the storms of the everyday, liquid reality. It is precisely such a gift of song that we wish to give you today: may the warm spirit of Christmas remain with you all year round, always.
