Sonny Tackett left eastern Kentucky in the seventies for Nashville Tenn., with a dream of becoming a songwriter. Twenty four hours later he had already secured a publishing contract and Tommy Overstreet was recording one of his songs,Down in the Quarter, which went on to become a hit, and has now been recently recorded again by bluegrass artist Charlie Sizemore. Becoming friends with Gary Stewart in the early 70's, Sonny had many songs recorded by Stewart including a top ten hit,and went on to co-write many songs with Gary. In 1992, RCA producer Roy Dea, Stewarts longtime producer, signed Sonny to his own label, Blue Day Records, distributed by RCA.With the same top musicians used by Stewart and and many other artists, including the great guitarist Wayne Perkins, Roy produced Sonny's debut cd, “The Way Of The Gun”, in the same Nashville studios Stewart and many other great artists recorded in. Having learned the ropes from Stewart, and being a smart buisness man, Sonny held on to the rights for the cd ,even though signed to Blue Day Records. Poorly distributed, and barely being heard on radio, nevertheless the cd gathered a cult following, and is still highly sought after today.Many songs from it have been covered by other artists, with Gary Stewart and Dewight Whitley both recording Sonnys ode to broken whiskey romance, “Make it a Double”.Feeling that Dea had used him to get songs for other srtists, Sonny went to visit him at RCA and while in his office alone, found hundreds of cds boxed up to ship out to radio stations that had never been shipped.Realizing now why radio airplay had been so little,Sonny refused to resign with Dea, and left Nashville with disgust and a resolve to continue on his own. Sonny concentrated heavily on his songwriting and touring, traveling the world and introducing his songs to anyone who would listen.Over the years he worked with hundreds of artists, and to date has had over fifty five songs recorded by other artists.He went to Alabama and recorded his self produced cd “Outlaws Lament”, and released it on his own Moondancer Records label.The cd has sold worldwide and brought much attention to his producing skills, resulting in his producing such artists as Gregg Allmans son Michael, who also recorded Sonny's song Laid Back. At every live show, songs from “The Way Of The Gun” were requested, and after popular demand, Moondancer has now re-released the cd.With songs like “Make it a Double”, “Mountain Man”,and “Pale Rider”,”The Way Of The Gun “now has a chance to be heard through the new digital world. Sonny continues to tour, produce, write,and record, with new cds in the works including a Gary Stewart tribute cd. Sonny Tackett paid his dues years ago, has been called “My favorite writer of all time” by the great Gary Stewart ,and is a professional in every aspect of the word. When you see him on the back of a stallion, its the real thing, not some stunt cover shot.When you hear him sing a song of heartbreak and deception, its the real thing, not some made up Nashville production line crap.Sonny Tackett is the real thing, and for the people who have seen him live, and felt the truth in his songs, it's very evident.If you like real American Roots Music, this is as close as it gets.
