Pianist Arthur Villar was born in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). He started his studies in piano, chamber music, theory and conducting in 2004, at the age of 21, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Among his achievements, he won the first prize in the Souza Lima National Piano Competition in Sao Paulo (Brazil), in 2007, for his piano performing and musical excellence and performed in 2009 the entire first book of the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S.Bach at the Forum Internacional del Piano de Barcelona. In February 2008 Arthur Villar was granted a scholarship to pursue his Bachelor's degree in Piano Performance at the internationally acclaimed Hartt School (University of Hartford) under the tutelage of Professor Luiz de Moura Castro. The present recording of Bach’s monumental Well-Tempered Clavier took place at Oktaven Audio (NY) with producer Ryan Streber and was released in February 2013. He imbued each Prelude and Fugue with a distinct personality and revealed structural details rarely heard in other performances, live or recorded. His treatment of recitative passages in the Preludes stood out for its blend of freedom and structure. Moreover, his rendering of Bach's compound line, for example in the Bb major Fugue, was unique, thanks to innovative phrasing and articulation.
