by Chris Barnes The Gods of Rock have smiled on us once again, bestowing on the rock loving community the new Terra Firma album. I enjoyed the their 1999 debut, but this one almost blows the debut clear out of the water. Everything has improved here, most notably the production values. Now we can hear the mighty TF the way the were meant to be heard...loud, blossoming with bottom-end, and bristling with energy. God bless Lord Chritus. The guy doesn't have the best voice in the world but he can do wonders with what he has. His is the voice that exudes personality and takes him places that even the dudes with the golden pharynx's can't go. When you hear that voice, you KNOW it's Lord Chritus. That and Freddie Eugene's amazing guitar work which further defines Terra Firma and distinguishes them as a top tier act in the vastly overcrowded hard rock underground. The first track, "Freebassing" is all instrumental and brings to mind many Floydian musical encounters... intriguing because this isn't what one would usually expect from the hard rockin' lads of Terra Firma, that is until "Groundman" kicks in. Yow! What a contrast!! "Groundman" is the kind of rock that brings to mind "Mob Rules" by Sabbath or "Killer Kane" by Las Cruces. It starts with crunch, kicks in with a catchy little riff, and all is metal bliss from then on. The mystical aspect of TF, perhaps a product of the bands past, comes to a full head with "Have Demon, Will Travel" and "Threefivenine" is perhaps one of the finest tracks the boys have written. "Sway" is aptly titled as the lilting melody gently rocks you until the tempo change mid-song threatens to tip the cradle right over, before it settles back into it's gentle sway. The epic "Steel Scale" is the perfect capper to a great album....9:07 of titanic heavy rock harmony. This one gets a 9 out of 10. Great album, multidimensional, something for everyone. Get it.
