Remembering 1975. The year my music ministry journey began at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. Dad had just returned from a remote tour in Thailand and was re-assigned to Lackland AFB. It was in my heart to play/sing at church so I asked Dad to check around the base to see if perhaps he could find a place for me to help out. After several phone calls, he got me lined up to start playing my guitar at Chapel #7. Since I didn’t have a driver’s license yet, I had to depend on Mom and Dad for transportation to/from the chapel every week, which they gladly did until I was able to drive myself. Remembering the sacrifices… Remembering 1999. The year my Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Thus began a different journey. Doctor visits, medications, irrational behaviors, hard times, tears, endless prayers became the new normal. Remembering the tens of thousands of people who are all affected in some way by this dreadful disease. Remembering those who are diagnosed on a daily basis. Remembering what my Dad said to my sister when he got the diagnosis....’Your poor mother’ Remembering July 1, 2009. The day my Dad’s suffering ended. The day my Mom went from full time caretaker to finally being able to take care of herself. Remembering that beautiful cardinal that gracefully flew across my path as tears were streaming down my face. A reminder to me that Dad was soaring…he was free…he had spread his wings and was headed home to heaven. Remembering how Moses’ 40 years in the desert and Jesus’ 40 days fasting all led to something much more beautiful and eternal. Remembering Dad. Remembering my 40 years and how Dad made that all possible for me.
