'English Rose' was written about my friend who attended the Mexican World Cup of 1986, he met a local girl, married her, had children and set up his own English language school business. 25 years later, he returned to England after being dumped, losing his business and losing his kids. He came back penniless, a broken man. On his return, I expressed to him that "there will always be an England and an English rose here for you". He ended up marrying his childhood sweetheart and now lives happily. When recording the song, I realized it could be used as a world cup anthem, summing up the feeling of the nation during the 2018 tournament.
