Cuicani is a collective of singer-songwriters, musicians, and music educators paying homage to Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin music through the inspiration and influences of their metropolis home in Los Angeles. The music of Cuicani features the talented Mavens singers, Marlene Beltran, Susana Rivas, and Misa Martinez, who provide rich vocal harmonies along with Tony Sauza on vocals and guitar. The rhythm section is comprised of the amazingly talented Caitlin Moss on drums, Jeff Goodkind on keyboards and John Northup on bass. With influences ranging from reggae to timba, ska to Cuban Son, rock steady to cumbia and Afro-Beat, Cuicani joins the Los Angeles collection of groups who for decades have blended and fused various styles to create an original and distinct sound. Formed in November of 2012, Cuicani is looking forward to sharing their music throughout the Los Angeles music scene and beyond! Beyond the performance aspect of the group, Cuicani is deeply committed to being agents of social change in their community. Inspired by the escola de sambas from Brazil and the plethora of community cultural centers around Los Angeles, Cuicani is committed to presenting educational workshops, drum circles, teatro classes, and other empowerment gatherings to local communities. All of the members of Cuicani are full-time and part-time music educators working with youth from K through 12th grade. Creating music taps into the most sacred spaces of our existence. Cuicani sees it as part of their mission to help inspire and create music makers throughout the world for the sake of enjoyment and healing. Cuicani is planning on releasing their debut EP in late April and continues to perform in and around the Southern California area. They are also preparing to launch an Indie-Go-Go campaign where they will need your help to support the release of their new music and first ever music video!
