简介

Holy Rollers专辑介绍:by Ned RaggettThe debut album by the original trio finds the Holy Rollers doing surprising well for such a young band; though there's the expected Dischord trademark of personal/political commitment and rough, punk-inspired playing, that's not where it stops. The three bandmembers sound well-rehearsed and focused without being studio-slick and sterile, while their songs have a surprising heft to them which actually sounds like Jane's Addiction without the overt pretension. There's vocal echo prominently used at points, epic guitar lines shooting up and out, strong drumming from Jones, and more (by no means it is a cloning, but it's a great way to add some variety to their sound). There's some amusing prescience here and there as well -- opening track "Eleventy" sounds at the start not all that far away from the Smashing Pumpkins' "I Am One" in its Gish version, which didn't surface until the following year. Those who can't stand Billy Corgan's singing will likely prefer the Aronstamn/Lambiotte combination here, though. Their sometimes back-and-forth trade of lines suggests similar call and response between Fugazi's main men, and while there's a tinge of that band's aggressive extremity in their earliest days, it's not overwhelming. Solid standouts: the fierce, catchy "Opus" and "Freedom Asking," both good examples of the trio at their loudest and best, and the concluding "Johnny Greed." In a smart guest turn, Juliana Luecking contributes a harrowing lyric and vocal on "Ode to Sabine County," a Christmas carol in reverse about a racially motivated beating in a jail that rips along at a fast clip before sliding into a tense, threatening crawl.
