Gary and Walter first met as members of the choir at First Baptist Church, Devine, TX. They discovered they shared formal training in music, Gary, in instrumental music and Walter, in piano and vocal music. In addition, they shared a belief that God was calling them to minister through music. Both of them admired the Gaither Vocal Band and they decided to join forces and form a southern gospel quartet. After several short lived efforts to put together a quartet and, later a trio, they finally decided that God was telling them that two voices were enough. They spent countless hours sifting through songs searching for arrangements that could be adapted to two voices. After many more hours spent in the woodshed, they have refined their own unique sound. HisWord is committed to serving God through song, where ever that path may lead. They have sung at the homes of elderly shut-ins, at nursing homes, at family gatherings, churches and prisons throughout south Texas. Gary and Walter sincerely believe that, “Whatever blessings those who hear us may receive, they receive no greater blessings than those we receive by being obedient to and serving our mighty, loving God.” Gary, his wife, Judy, and their doghter, Katie, live on a small ranch near Natalia, TX. They raise a few sheep and goats and enjoy sitting on their patio watching the deer, feral hogs and turkeys feed in their backyard. Gary’s favorite pastimes are hunting and fishing. He particularly enjoys September in the Rocky Mountains, chasing elk and enjoying the kaleidoscope of colors that adorn the majestic Rockies. Several years ago, Gary realized that God was calling him to expand his Christian walk by becoming directly involved in Christian ministry. Over time, God led Gary to the realization that he needed to serve God through music. Gary’s formal education includes a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music Literature degree but his training in music had been unused since 1979, the last year he worked as a high school band director. A divine meeting at First Baptist Church Devine, TX with gospel singer, Stephen Hill, finally emboldened Gary to step up and be obedient to God. During a spirit filled evening service, Mr. Hill sang his song “Lord Let Me Make a Difference.” Gary realized that he needed to stop ‘thinking’ about what God wants him to do and to start ‘doing’ what God wants him to do. Never a singer, Gary joined the church choir and began learning how to sing. Along the way, God has opened doors for Gary to sing in trios, quartets and now, with Walter, as a part of HisWord. Walter Sprague was born in the Gold Country of California’s foothills and was raised in the San Joaquin Valley in and near Modesto. His father was a career band director, music minister, and member of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra until he retired. His mother is an operatically trained gospel singer and worked as a schoolteacher. Growing up, Walter sang as a trio with his brother and sister. His entire family toured the Northern California area giving concerts in local churches. During his high school and early college years, Walter received formal vocal training and was a member of the Modesto Performing Arts Association. He sang in youth choirs, adult choirs and praise teams as well as singing in several oratorios with the Modesto Master Works Chorus. He was a member of the barbershop chorus, Modesto Melody Makers, and was the baritone in the barbershop quartet, 'Shave and a Haircut' for most of the 1990s. He has sung in gospel quartets in church denominations from Assembly of God to Southern Baptist. While in college, Walter received formal training in music theory, piano, and conducting. He directed several church music programs in California, from youth choirs to full ministries. In July of 2006 Walter, moved to the San Antonio areas to marry hisl bride, Connie. Since moving to Texas, Walter has held music ministry positions in Castroville, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio.
